Shorthanded Franklin Defeats Arrowhead White to Continue State Title Quest

Injuries to key starters and steamy weather conditions could have been a recipe for an upset in the second-round matchup between Franklin and Arrowhead White girls lacrosse teams.

But the healthy Sabers – the No. 4 team in the state – managed to step up for injured starters sophomore Kendra Haselow and senior Bella Barnard and soundly defeated the Lady Warhawks 12-4. The Sabers advance to host Waunakee Saturday.

“It’s really hot and we’re a bit low on numbers,” coach Jill Kyhn said. “For us to be running a limited number of girls in this heat, we played unbelievably well.”

Franklin (13-3) jumped out to a big lead in the first half and never looked back. Sophomore middie/attack Jillian Krueger led the charge, scoring four of her game-high five goals in the first half. Senior middie/attack Allie Marion scored three goals in the game, as well.

“We played really disciplined ball, which is critical, especially when you’re low on subs in this heat,” Kyhn said. “When we get off to a good start, we tend to stay good. It builds so much confidence.”

Along with Krueger and Marion’s scoring barrage, Kyhn credited the players who filled in admirably for Haselow and Barnard. Haselow tore her ACL against Mukwonago May 10, and Barnard twisted her ankle representing Team Wisconsin on the East Coast over Memorial Day weekend.

In Barnard’s place, senior Brianna Tobin stepped up to play significant minutes at middie – a position she hadn’t played much this year. Sophomore Lauren Schwartz pitched in, as well, by stepping into the draw circle versus Arrowhead White (5-10) without missing a beat.

“We have a bunch of players that can play multiple positions,” Marion said. “So for us seniors, that was a big role they had on their shoulders, and we appreciate it a lot.”

Despite the heat and the shortened bench, the Sabers pulled out the victory to extend the season for at least one more game for the outgoing Kyhn and the class of 2018. Even though they earned the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye, the Sabers want to prove they are among the state’s elite programs.

“There were a bunch of things that happened this season where people were overlooking us,” Krueger said. “We’re excited to show what we’re made of and what Franklin lacrosse has to offer.”

Madison Westside Upsets Waukesha to Advance

Madison Westside entered its Wednesday night state tournament game versus host Waukesha as the underdog, but a strong class of eight outgoing seniors wasn’t about to let that end their high school careers.

Led by four goals from senior attack Jack Wollaeger and a bruising style of play on both sides of the ball, the Crusaders took out the favored Nighthawks, 11-10, at Waukesha West High School. With the victory, they earn a trip north to play No. 4 Appleton United Friday night.

“This game, we were able to focus on the fact that we didn’t want it to be our last game, and we allowed that to really carry us through,” Westside coach Michael Evans said. “We have a great senior class, and they didn’t want this to be their final game.”

Westside (5-9) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter as Wollaeger started out white hot. He scored the first and third goals of that run and assisted on senior middie Aris Lummennes’ goal, as well.

Waukesha (9-6) fought back to tie the game at three before the end of the quarter with help from some costly Crusader penalties, including a 3-minute locked flag for an illegal pocket. Westside finished the game with 12 penalties.

“To start out just going up 3-0 as a big underdog kind of shocked them a little,” Wollaeger said. Then we got some penalties and the came back on us. We’ve lost a lot of close games, but it’s mostly penalties that have been killing us.”

The Nighthawks carried the momentum into the second quarter, ending a run of six unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead.

However, Westside settled down in the second half. After entering halftime down 6-5, Wollaeger started a 5-2 scoring run for the Crusaders as they took a 10-8 lead after three quarters.

Waukesha senior middie Tyler Leitner brought the Nighthawks within a goal with 7 minutes, 31 seconds left to play when his third goal of the game made the score 11-10. They had Westside in a 2-minute, locked-in, man-down situation with 2:45 left in the fourth, but Waukesha couldn’t convert.

“Both teams had their chances, but we just let it slip away a little bit,” Waukesha coach Ken Dixon said.

Senior middie Peter Franceschi also had three goals for Waukesha. Sophomore goalie Gavin Richards saved 12 shots for Westside.

State Tournament Changes

The Wisconsin Lacrosse Federation is announcing the restructuring of Boy’s High School postseason.

While still consisting of two tournaments, the Division 2 designation will be dropped.  All Wisconsin boys varsity teams will be eligible for the Championship Tournament with the top 20 teams seeded into the Championship Tournament.

Those teams not qualifying for the Championship Tournament will be invited to play in the Wisconsin Invitational and have the ability to opt out should they choose to do so.

The top 20 teams in the Championship Tournament will compete in a five round playoff culminating in the Championship Game at 7:30PM  Saturday, June 9th.

The Finals for the Invitational will be held at 4 PM on June 9th with both games will be held on Schneider Field at Carroll University.

“This change will create a more competitive Championship Tournament, particularly in the early rounds,” said WLF President Erin Ennis.

“The seeding committee can now take into consideration the strength of each individual team without regard to program size or school designation. But more importantly, we still retain the opportunity for every high school boy’s program to participate in the postseason should they choose to do so.” Ennis said.

The seeding committee will meet on May 23rd with the tournament brackets and invitations issued the following day.

This marks the first major change in the boy’s state tournament structure in eight years.
